 High Impact Practices

What are High Impact Practices?

High Impact Practices are practices students engage in, where learning goes beyond the classroom to be applied in their personal and work lives. Internships, Undergraduate Research, Service Learning and Study Abroad are all considered High Impact Practices.

Students who are engaged in HIPs see improvement in their GPA, are more engaged in their education, and obtain their degree more quickly. In a high impact learning experience students will actively pose and solve problems, work collaboratively in a community of peers, experience real-world applications of knowledge, and reflect on your learning experience.

Study Abroad

As a Compact Scholar you have access to the Associate Director of International Engagement, Chris Kjonaas. If you are interested in studying abroad learn about the process here.

University Seminar

University Seminar (GENS 100A) is a one unit, credit/no credit course designed to help first-year students become engaged members of the San Diego State University academic community. The instructional team helps connect students to faculty, peers, and their discipline early in their college career. The course encourages students to claim their education through a focus on the process of learning, to cultivate the habits of mind of lifelong achievement and success, and to develop skills that are applicable across subjects and across time. Through the reflection and discussion that is required of them in this course, students are asked to understand their role as members of the academic community and the responsibility and privileges associated with their membership therein.

The course blends Web-based curriculum on Blackboard with required face-to-face meetings with faculty and/or peer mentors - a model that provides flexibility, yet requires commitment and self-directed students.

Student Success Pathways

San Diego State University offers a variety of Student Success Pathways for incoming freshmen. This is a campus-wide initiative in which multiple offices and colleges work in collaboration. Students participating in a Pathway build relationships with peers, faculty, and staff and achieve a deeper understanding of course material and have higher GPAs.
