Outstanding Compact Scholar Researcher 2014

Kathryn Paras earns the Outstanding Compact Scholar Research award
at the SDSU Student Research Symposium.

Kathryn Paras

The Outstanding Compact Scholar Researcher award was given to Kathryn Paras in March 2014 at SDSU’s Student Research Symposium.  Her research, “Air Pollutant Concentrations of Particulate Matter 2.5 within San Diego State University’s Campus” found that East Commons had a high concentration of air pollution.  She worked under the supervision of Zohir Chowdhury, her research advisor, and Kathryn states that she was extremely surprised by her findings.  More information about her research is available at: Kathryn Paras Research Study pdf.  Her findings sparked additional interest in her, and so she has continued examining air pollution in other food courts in San Diego County.

Not only has Kathryn gained valuable research experience while at SDSU, but she also studied abroad and was involved in various student organizations.  She studied abroad at the University of Magdeburg in Germany for a one week spring break program. By touring hospitals and meeting health care professionals in Germany, she walked away with a greater understanding and appreciation for their universal health care system. Kathryn was also involved in Students for Public Health and Sigma Phi Omega, and volunteered with Women Against Domestic Violence and the San Diego Coastkeeper. Kathryn’s experiences in undergraduate research, study abroad, and student organizations have transformed her SDSU experience, and thus she recommends that other Compact Scholars “Get involved and put yourself out there as early as possible.”

Kathryn earned her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health from SDSU in May 2014.  She continues to volunteer with San Diego Coastkeeper and will be applying to graduate programs in Environmental Health for Fall 2015.  Ultimately, Kathryn hopes to do more research in the future.
